Differences between therapist types
In Ontario, there are several different types of professionals who are licensed to perform psychotherapy. The majority of insurance providers recognize these three types of professionals:
Depending on your insurance coverage, you may be covered for therapy provided by either one, two or all three types of professionals.
Here we will discuss the differences between each therapist type so that you can determine which therapist would be suitable for your needs.
Psychologists
Psychologists have a doctorate degree (PhD or PsyD) in clinical psychology, with over 3,000 hours of supervised clinical training. They have specific training in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health issues. Psychologists are also trained to administer psychological assessments, such as intellectual, cognitive, neuropsychological, and personality assessments. They cannot prescribe medication.
The average cost for a psychologist is $200-$250 per session. This does not include separate costs associated with testing or assessments.
Psychotherapists
Psychotherapists can have a variety of backgrounds, though they will typically have a Master's degree along with some supervised clinical training. They are trained in the treatment of mental health issues, with an emphasis on building a therapeutic relationship and reframing situations. Psychotherapists are unable to make a diagnosis, perform a psychological assessment, or prescribe medication.
The average cost for a psychotherapist is $100-$200 per session.
Some psychotherapists may work under supervision of a psychologist which allows them to bill as a psychologist under your insurance coverage at a lower rate than a psychologist would charge (please check with your insurance if this would work for you prior to booking a supervised session).
Social workers
Social workers are required to have a Bachelor's degree (BSW) or Master's degree (MSW) in social work. Similar to psychotherapists, social workers are also trained in the treatment of mental health issues, though they have an emphasis on supporting all aspects of a person's livelihood that impacts their well-being. Social workers are unable to make a diagnosis, perform a psychological assessment, or prescribe medication.
The average cost for a social worker is $100-$200 per session.
